XP Firewall problem after update

I've just reinstalled XP professional on a friends computer and all was ok until the last update (it may have been a.NET Framework update).


After this update the Local Area Connection takes 2 minutes to come on. It would appear this is happening because the Windows Firewall is slow coming on and the LAC can't start until the Firewall is on?


I've tried new drivers for the NIC with no improvement. I've also tried turning off the Firewall, it's says it's off but the red warning sign still comes up and the LAC doesn't start until this is on.


Any suggestions appreciated.
