Crash and burn

Have a computer with 98 and XP home on it. A virus crashed XP and I want to
reinstall it. But when I try to install XP says it cannot find windows on my
machine and asks for older versions of windows to verify my use of the XP
upgrade disc. I don't have older versions of windows. What do I do?

Did you boot with the install cd?

Your version must be an upgrade version, and needs the previous media to
prove you are allowed to use the upgrade version.

see if you can find a friend that has a win ME cd.

Don't you have the Windows 98 disk?

You are trying to use an Upgrade CD to do a clean installation, I
assume. That's fine, but it requires that you have CD of a previous
version. If you don't have one, there are only two choices:

1. Buy a Full XP CD (or an OEM one, which I recommend against).

2. Buy a used copy of Windows 98 inexpensively someplace like eBay.
That's the choice I recommend.
