I'm actually suggesting that you *remove* your C drive, and any other
physical hard disks, for the install. This isn't hard to do and
significantly reduces risks.
If you leave the existing drive in, the new drive will not be C, but will
get boot loader modifications that you many not really want. If you
replace the drive, the new one will be C, unless you've got something like a
Zip drive installed. Watch carefully as the drives are detected and
named.
So, if what you're really wanting to do is test your hardware, remove the
old drives, put the new one in, install Vista and test. Regardless of
whether it does or doesn't work, you have then made no impact at all on your
XP install or data.
If it does work out, you can then review your options for dual boots or
migrating data - but those are a different topic.
