XP 64 and Audio Issues

Hope someone can help.

On my new system I have a problem with audio distortion under XP64. I set up
a dual boot with XP 32 and I
don't have any problems with the audio on that OS. The device manufacturer
says that there are no driver
issues and they have been thoroughly tested under XP64 and Vista64.
Microsoft won't help with the problem and I'm running out of time before
getting hardware replacements.
One of those deals where everyone is pointing at someone else.

One other thing I noticed under XP64 is that when it's detecting a device
that's been added, or anything
plugged into the USB or Firewire port, the mouse freezes or operates
erratically until it's done working in the
background. I didn't think that going 64 bit meant ending multitasking so I
thought this behaviour to be strange.
The IRQ's are assigned almost identical to the XP32 OS on the same machine
and that behaviour is not
showing up on that OS.

I have 8 GB ram so I really want the 64 Bit OS to work and I've heard horror
stories relating to Vista 64 and
performance issues when dealing with audio/video work compared to XP.

Any help or direction would sure be appreciated. I'm running the trial
version of XP64 with SP2 and all updates.
I need to try and get this resolved to decide if I'm going to purchase XP64
or start returning hardware.

System Info:
My system is an Intel Quad 6600, Gigabyte x38 DQ6 motherboard, 8 GB OCZ
Reaper ram, Nvidia 8600GT,
(6) RaptorX 150 drives (2 individuals for OS and programs and 2 pair for

Perhaps you should tell us what your audio hard and Software is and the
specific connection(s) you are using (want to use) for it?

Firewire support IS shakey, I suspect.

Is the Trial-Version accommodating for installing Service Pack's? I'm not
sure I was aware of that.

Appart from that, I do NOT think you should have to expect any issues with
XP x64 at least - I am certainly having beautyful sound on my dual-booting
system. I am currently using an internal HD Sound chip, before that I
succesfully used a - now somewhat older Creative board, with then - Beta
Drivers!

Tony, I seem to recall that we've seen this a few times here, though it's
not a subject I've followed. My memory, however, is that it's been driver
related? (Darn, I wish Carlos were here - he's our collective memory for
things like this!)

In all probability drivers, yes. Then again, on reflection, I remember
having had some distortion once that turned out to be an effect of picking
'Digital Sound' in one configuration dialog and not in another!

Since Red Dog mentions Firewire, though, I expect that using such equipment
for audio media processing might also be an avenue of investigation?

It's true though, Carlos does have a way with such matters.

FWIW, the sound on my gigabyte nforce4 mobo is terrible. I can move
the mouse and hear noise on the audio. This is with earbuds of course,
but still...

The original poster also said there is a lock up when devices are
inserted into the USB port. While my mysteriously problems are on
this newsgroup, USB related lockups aren't one of them.

Photoshop and OpenOffice Calc decided to work today, after taking a
month off (crashing). I just ship the openoffice files to the linux
box when X64 bellyaches, but gimp is a poor substitute for photoshop.

I've gone through the drivers with a fine tooth comb, several times.
Uninstalling, installing, and every combo in between.

I'm at my wits end. I wish Microsoft, Gigabyte, and Creative would pow-wow
and sort this one out. Seems as though many folks are having this issue. I'm
really starting to think it is HW issue possibly related to memory
allocation.

Someone please post some meaningful information on this subject!
