Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for PC problem

I hope someone here can help me. I purchased the wireless 360
controller for the PC with USB receiver. When I first installed it,
everything worked great. Even with the updates, I had no issues. I
would turn it on and the controller would almost immediately light up
the 1 quadrant. I didn't use it for a while and recently I decided to
pick it up. It sat for a couple of months. I put new batteries in,
just in case. I fired up the controller and it began flashing
quickly, then started doing a steady flash and not making a
connection. I tried resyncing the receiver and the controller with no
luck. I took it over to my other machine and installed it. This time
the controller recognized the receiver and synced. I move it back to
my first computer, nothing but steady ring flash. I uninstalled all
of the software and removed the driver and reinstalled. Same thing.
I know the controller is working. Does anyone know what could
possibly be causing this? I have a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, and a
USB printer that has its own power supply. Thank you for the help.

Normally, when a USB device fails on one port, you try to set it up on
a different port. Have you tried this?

Sorry, I should have said that. I have tried on three different ports
attached to my computer.
