My problems are specifically a very low frame rate. Based on my
hardware (I'm going through a ASUS P4P800 motherboard with a 550watt
psu) I don't think I should be getting low framerates (low like
slideshow 5 or 6 fps) in even older games (age of mythology, ut 2k4,
empire earth 2, age of empires 3, etc.). I just reformatted and
perfected my computer a few days ago. Everything is updated. I have a
selective startup only running what is required for my system to
run.... I'm not sure what to do. Anybody know if this is on par with my
specs? (I'm running these games maxed out, but even in developer videos
with the devs using the same level of hardware it runs perfect maxed
out) If anybody has any idea what could be causing my troubles, let me
know. Also, I have had this pc for a few years and always have had the
same performance. Do I have bad hardware? Let me know!!!

Thanks!

Did your reinstall ALL the motherboard and video drivers
after the reformat?

You are using a lot of pagefile, if the report is correct,
you might want to go to 2 GB RAM or check your FSB to help
disk performance.

For your hardware specs those framerates are incredibly low. Your graphics
card is faster but the system is close enough to mine that I would expect
UT2k4 framerates at least 10x that range with full eye-candy turned on. That
said, I have seen some equally low 3DMark benchmark scores for similar
hardware, various MBs, where a handful of computers scored only a tiny
fraction of the range that the majority of equivelent computers' scores were
in. Couldn't say what the problem is but I suspect hardware on the
motherboard. You could maybe try benchmarking the computer using a different
OS, perhaps using one of the "live" Linux CDs that can be downloaded from
the web. If the results are similarly low it would rule out Windows
software/drivers as the cause.

You should have installed chipset drivers for the Intel chipset.
In Device Manager, look in "System". There should be a "Processor to
AGP Controller" entry. If you check the driver, it is "AGP440.sys".
It is also possible, instead of an AGP entry, to use a "PCI bridge"
driver instead, and then you won't have proper accelerated texture
transfers.

The second thing is the ATI drivers. Under "Display Adapters" you
should see a couple entries, and each of those will have a whole
pile of ATI driver files.

The third thing is you should have DirectX installed, but your above
listing shows DirectX 9c is installed. You can reinstall DirectX
over and over again, and nothing should be adversely affected.

Another check you can do, is to download the Powerstrip evaluation
from Entechtaiwan.com .

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm

Powerstrip has a status screen you can access from the Taskbar popup.

http://www.playtool.com/pages/agpfix/powerstrip2.gif

In that example, you can see the video card is using DMA for texture
transfer. Another equally valid option is DIME or direct in memory
execution. The option you don't want, is "Disabled", as that will
give you a slide show in benchmarks.

The picture of the Powerstrip screen, is from this web page:

Paul

Thanks for the quick reply!

I thought my fps was rather low for my hardware. I didn't install the
video drivers or sound drivers for my motherboard, since I have a
Radeon and an X-fi.... And I disabled both the motherboard video and
sound in the device manager, so I can't see that this would give me a
problem. Everything is up to date, including bios.... And since I have
X-fi, X850XT, and other good hardware.... The only thing that I can
think of is some kind of cpu bottleneck. That just leads me to the
motherboard, but its an ASUS p4p800 which was an award winning board.

As for pagefile.... I don't want to upgrade to more ram, since if I
have to scrap the entire system and start from scratch I will get
PC3200 anyway. Have you guys heard of anything like this before?

Have you guys seen any problems with my model of board before? I have a
P4 with HT enabled... and I heard that can cause problems on older
processors. I disabled and got nothing. I tried adjusting my AGP memory
in the bios to no effect at all. So unless somebody else has any
ideas.... Should I scrap it?

There are several mobo drivers, such as Intel's application
accelerator, that should be installed..

In theory there's nothing inherent in your existing hardware that should
cause such low performance. That leaves the possibilities of hardware
misconfiguration, a software problem or defective hardware (including the
mobo itself). One thing for certain, motherboard video and on-board sound
should be disabled in BIOS, not just Device Manager, and any drivers for
them uninstalled not just disabled. Other incorrect settings in BIOS could
be implicated if you "tweaked" RAM or other such timings. As you found out,
AGP aperture is pretty much irrelevent any more. CPU hyperthreading turned
on is fine, amount of RAM is fine.. Don't know about that audio card. If you
haven't already you should try to rule out software by disabling anything
that loads at startup and then test your games. Testing without any 3rd
party software installed would have been ideal. My current system (OEM ASUS
board) has a 3.2Ghz HT P4, ATI X600Pro and 1Gig RAM, with on-board sound.
Framerates vary on different maps but it gets around 60FPS in UT2k4 Antalus
@ 1280x1024 with video settings at high and all eye candy turned on. Your
rates should be higher than that.

The various game framerates I got in 3DMark 2001 ranged from 47FPS to
195FPS. The fastest overall benchmark score I was able to get with my
X600Pro graphics card was about 13400 3DMarks. Nothing exceptional but it
was still at the higher end for that model video card in similar computers.
Most scores for X600s were well under 16000 and only one person managed to
score over 19000. Out of over 4 dozen test scores registered by people using
X850 graphics cards in P4s with clock speeds ranging from 3Ghz to 3250Ghz
the vast majority scored in the low 20000s range. One 3Ghz ASUS board
managed to score 42425 3DMarks, with individual game frame rates from
218-679 FPS (ATI 6.14.10.6599 driver). There were 2 computers in the group
however, one @3Ghz (Abit) and one @3.2Ghz (ASUS) that only scored 6500
3DMarks. Something was definitely wrong with those two systems.

You thought correctly, Something's conflicting, or a setting or two is
incorrect, or simply a defective piece of hardware.

First, double check your drivers. I'm thinking your video card drivers are
a little out of date. Current Catalyst drivers are v7.9 www.ati.com It
looks like the x-fi ones are correct, but for the record, latest are
2.09.0007 www.creative.com Then I'd hop on over to
http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=1&model=P4P800&SLanguage=en-us and make sure you have the latest motherboard drivers.

Second, go to Control Panel -->> Add/Remove programs and double check that
the onboard sound drivers weren't inadvertantly installed or didn't uninstall
properly.

Double check bios to make sure onbard audio and video (if your board has it)
are disabled.

I'm thinking the problem may possibly be a conflict with the x850 and the
x-fi card. So if your still having a problem after the steps above (actually
maybe you should just try this procedure first if you're confident all
drivers are up to date), uninstall your x-fi sound drivers. Power off
completely, remove the card, run your system without the x-fi and see if
you're back up to speed. If so, re-install x-fi (powered down first of
course) but NOT in the same PCI slot, use a different slot, install drivers,
reboot, and hopefully your good to go. If not then it's a little more
complicated (i.e start from scratch reinstalling windows, reset bios
settings, could be a defective piece of hardware, etc. Let's hope that's not
the case.

I had a problem with my old system when my x-fi was trying to share the same
irq with my radeon x700 card, but it was mainly with Battlefield 2, not
nearly as severe as your problem.

Hope this helps.
