When I enter the Works 8.5 site, I get a box saying "500 fonts in system"
and that the number has to be reduced to avoid errors. It does not say just
how I can reduce them. Anyone have any ideas?

Click start >control panel >fonts. Take care not to delete system fonts.
Windows doesn't like that.

I'm getting the same error message when I open Works too but when I go into

You will have to move your fonts, or delete them, from the system fonts
folder.

It's is very hard to use that many fonts at the same time when the fonts
menu is so incredibly long. Graphic designers and other people that use a
lot of fonts (I use a lot of fonts for architectural presentation panels)
use a font manager program. You can use these to activate font groups on
the fly, as you need them. It's also very handy for previewing fonts in a
certain size and with certain test text.

I use Extensis Suitcase
http://www.extensis.com/en/products/font_management/product_information.jsp?locale=en_US&id=1055

but there are free alternatives that you could look for:
