Word documents do not open

I am having trouble opening Word 2002 files, either in a folder or on the
desktop. In the past, all I had to do was double-click on a specific file's
icon and the file opened. Now Word loads, but it doesn't open. The window
stays gray, and the document doesn't open. This is driving me batty.

The only solution I've found is to load Word first -- blank document --
minimize it, then go back and double-click the document I want.

Is there any way to open a file without having to go through all this
rigamarole? I've tried everything I can think of. -- Virus scan, spam scan,
getting rid of software I don't need, cleaning the registry. I even
re-registered Word. Nothing seems to work.

Hi Walter,

See if reassociating .doc files with Word helps resolve the
problem.......right-click on one of your document files, select Open With
then Choose Program, select Word and click in the checkbox beside "Always use
this program...." to place a check there, then click on OK.

Yes, the association worked just as you said. Thank you. Unfortunately, I
still can't open Word files with a double click or with a right-click/Open.
Please, try again. You seem to be on the right track. It's slow but it works.

Try deleting normal.dot

How was it that you re-registered Word, did you key in winword /r (then click
on OK or hit ENTER) at the Start>Run Open field? If not, give that a try.

Oh my! I've always believed that deleting normal.dot spells disaster. How do
I do that without losing everything I've spent years putting together -- all
my macros, shortcuts, settings, etc.?

The last thing I want to do is lose normal.dot. It's the foundation of Word.

Then, as a test, rename it. It will be recreated. If that causes the
end of the world, delete the newly created copy, and rename the earlier one.
