Benjamin Yazersky CPA

I have a XP computer that won't go to sleep.
It is completely up to date on updates


If I ....

Start
Turn off Computer
Standby

the computer will go into standby
but it wakes itself up in about a minute or two
sometimes the monitor stays asleep - sometimes the monitor wakes up with the
computer


also, it won't go into sleep mode if left idle for the amount of time left
idle in the power settings in the control panel
just the screen saver
i think it does put the monitor to sleep
but the computer just won't go to sleep

i suggest to use the hibernation
mode power feature instead of
the standby mode.

if you want your pc to go into
a temporary state like standby
then use your screensaver.

its the standby mode that is the problem

this is a desktop, not a laptop
is it safe to use hibernate mode on a desktop?

Absolutely fine to use hibernate on a desktop. Hibernate drops power and to
recover just push power on key.

yes, hibernation will work
fine on a desktop.

unlike windows standard
screensavers, there are some third party
screensavers that cause problems
because they keep the cpu
busy. and if the cpu is active
then the computer cannot go
to sleep automatically.

you could test your desktop with
the following example, afterwards
you can fine tune the settings that
are best for you:

go to the desktop right click and
select properties. then under the
screensaver tab select a standard
microsoft screensaver (one provided
by windows) and set the time to
say 1 minute.

next there should be a power
button that you can click.

at the power mode page set
turn off monitor to "2" minutes
and then set the hibernation
mode to "3" minutes. harddisks
and standby should be set to
"never"

then ok everything and close the
boxes and sit back for a few minutes.

what should happen is that the
screensaver will engage, then a
minute or two afterwards the
desktop should go into hibernation.

if so, then you are set and ready
to modify the above accordingly
and add more time to the settings.

there are a couple of extra little
things for hibernation:

you can manually hibernate
the desktop by clicking on start,
turn off computer. if you the get a
standby option, pressing the shift
key will change it to hibernation
and you can then click on it.

also, you can create a icon
to hibernate for your desktop or
quick launch bar by creating a new
shortcut and entering (cut paste)
the line into the location window:
