Hi,

I searched the forum and haven't seen anything about this, I don't know what
my computer is, I hope that doesn't make a difference.

But anyway, after I changed from ME to XP, my computer won't shut down, it
just sits there saying it's shutting down forever. I have to do a soft
reboot to get it to come back.

Any ideas?
Thanks!
Terri

Did you do a clean install of XP or upgrade to XP with ME still installed?

If you find no fix here then read below!

As long as you can find all your software application CD(s) "With the CD Key
Code stickers"
and the XP drivers for your motherboard from the manufacture's web site I
would do a 'Clean Install'.
Note that during the install Windows XP (if you are using the 'Upgrade'
version of XP),
Windows will ask you to insert your Windows ME CD as confirmation. So make
certain you can still
find the old Windows ME CD!!!

First: As mentioned, make sure you have downloaded (From the PC
manufacture's web site)
"all the XP drivers" you need for your motherboard, video card, sound card,
Etc. for your PC's make and model.

Next: If you can download and install Belarc Advisor on your PC before you
start a clean install
Belarc will display for you a list of the hardware devices and software key
codes that are on the PC.
Write this information down and double check that you have a match for the
drivers I mentioned above.
Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Next: How to do a Clean Install of Windows XP:
Note that you may need to change the BIOS setting to Boot from CD drive (CD
is first boot device).
Then see and read the postings below:

Note: I forgot to mention that if you have any important files, save them to
a CD or DVD before you start a clean install!!!

Hi,
You could try the upgrade advisor to see if your hardware is compatibly
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx

Perhaps post back anything suspect.
