I have been testing Windows 8.1 on our school computers, which are running windows xp and so coul sorely use the upgrade. On the one computer i have been testing it on, i removed the harddrives with the winxp installation, installed a new 2 TB HDD, and proceeded to install Windows 8 on the drive. The drives were completely disconnected from the computer.

I tried out win 8, it worked perfectly, couldnt be happier with it, but we are stillwaiting on seeing whether the school distric will give us win8 install keys. In the meantime, i needed to get the computer back to the old Win XP installation for students to use. I removed the Win 8 HDD and reinstalled the two Win XP drives, and win xp booted perfectly. When i logged in though, it would not connect to the internet. I checked, and it still had the exact same settings, as far as i could tell, and no other hardware was modified.

To test it, i have hooked it up to a standard netgear router. The router, when hooked up to another identical computer, worked perfectly, and the computer was assigned an ip correctly. However, on our problem compuer, the computer has limited or no connection, with a 169.254.80.79 IP, subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and no default gateway or dns server. I tried a static IP, subnet mask, and Default gateway to match other working computers to no avail (couldnt ping default gateway) all this while hooked into the same network as fully functional computers. Notably, a correct ip would be 10.55.220.* with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

The ethernet adapter is a Marvel Yukon 88E8057 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller. I tried uninstalling it, disabling and enabling it, and ran the repair service on it, which meerly said it could not renew the IP address. The computer is fully up-to-date, and i have restarted it multiple times.

The driver, though out-of-date, is the same as on other fully functioning computers. When plugged in, the lights next to the ethernet cable do flash and chatter in a seemingly normal manner. In the system logs, it reports that "Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the network card with an address <> ... ". It shows up as a warning.

Finally, i put the win8 HDD back in and booted it up, and it is working absolutely perfectly still.

So, i am completely and utterly stuck. Anyone have any ideas? I would really appretiate it.
