I had a problem with Norton Ghost. Their techs said it was OS. I re-installed from my Dell disk without deleting all my data. When I came back up everything appeared in order then I tried to update to SP3.

My First problem was my IE would not work. I finally got it back to IE8 and attempted update to SP3 at which time I got the error code above.

I found the thread posted by 1978jag on 9/22/12 and the answer that followed posted by tricky300 on the same date. I followed the link and made 3 attempts to run the update - all failed. The first attempt was the default, Go To Microsoft Update(Recommended). I got the above error code.

The second try was to run it from the download center - file download I clicked RUN. My Norton 360 was up and running. I was not watching the process but when I checked I had an error box labeled Service Pack 3 Setup Error : ACCESS DENIED with OK button.

I click OK and got: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete

Select OK to undo the changes that you have made.

OK

I clicked OK and it went through a removal process giving me yet another error: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete. Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly. OK

I click OK and it rebooted the system

The third try was exactly like the second except 1. I turned off Norton 360 and 2. I downloaded the link to my machine and ran it locally. The errors were IDENTICAL.

I am at a loss. I do not like sitting here with SP2. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
