Hi all
Have noticed many discussions about the importance of backing up ones
computer information in case of a crash or other problems, and would like to
do so.
I have read many of the posts pertaining to backing up to assist me.
Almost all of the replies, that I have noticed, advise the use of a third
party backup system. I'm somewhat confused, why would Dell preinstall a
backup system in computers when it cannot be used, (If, it, in fact, cannot
be used).
Appreciate any helpful advice.

The default backup ntbackup, if thats what you are refering to, was designed
before cd's were invented and hasnt been rewritten since then.
It can be used, but not directly to a cd/dvd
Third party solutions usually have an easy to navigate interface for use in
both backup & recovery and are able to backup to allmost any media including
over the internet. Often they can encrypt and compress, and usually verify
the backup
My personal preference is Acronis True Image

Here are three backup choices:
a) The inbuilt ntbackup tool. As DL says, it's very basic and not
particularly easy to use.
b) Batch files. If you know how to write a batch file then this is
a very simple and highly effective backup solution.
c) Third party products, e.g. Acronis. As DL writes, this is a very
nice and very effective product.

In all cases I recommend you use a 2.5" hard disk in an external
USB case as a backup medium. Remember these extremely
important points:
- Backup your EMail files too. Many people forget them.
- You must do a test recovery of some sample files, including
your EMail files, right now and then perhaps twice each year.
If you don't then you might be in for a nasty surprise when
the crunch comes.
- You must store your backup medium well away from your
PC. If you keep it connected to the PC then you risk losing
the lot when something bad happens.
