Windows XP Pro needs to be updated to Windows 7

I was using Windows XP Pro and I've just purchased over the Internet the Product Key for Windows 7, I do have the Product Key but I am finding it difficult to change the Product key even if I am using the instructions given to me by Microsoft, can anyone help me please?
