I have windows XP Pro withh all sevice packs installed. When winXP
boots my Benq Lightscribe DVD writer opens on its own, is there a
setting in windows that will stop this happening. It continues to open
of its own accord when it wants too

Check for possible virus / spyware / malware infestation. This should
like a spyware / malware / virus infection.

Also, uninstall this drive in Device Manager and reboot. XP should
reset the drive drivers back to Microsoft's defaults.

What exactly do you mean by "opens on its own"?

Does the drive door open?
Does Windows open and display the contents of the DVD/CD that's in the
drive?

The first is virus/malware, the second is expected behaviour.
