Windows XP Media Center Version 2002... I have several programs that load
whenever I restart my computer and I would like to know how to prevent this
from occurring... as these are cumbersome programs that really slow down my
performance and impact the programs I am trying to use. Thanking you in
advance for your assistance in this matter.
Oh, while I'm here... does it make any sense for me to upgrade the version
of XP I'm using? ...I noticed there are apparently later versions available
but I'm not sure my processor and system-in-general are capable of any
upgrades: Intel Pentium M processor 1.73GHz 1.49 GB of RAM ... any
suggestions?

Do you know how to use msconfig?

go to start and run type in msconfig and then go to load ini, remove the
check mark on those you won't want to load upon start

typed msconfig... but there was no reference I could find for 'load.ini'...
there are the following tabs: General, System.ini, Win.ini, Boot.ini, &
Startup. Thought I'd better be cautious and ask before unchecking anything
at this stage... any further instuctions would sure be appreciated...

The first place to look is always within the programs themselves. Most
programs have Preferences or Options where you can set them to start/not
start with Windows. If the programs do not have this, then use the
System Configuration Utility (msconfig). Here is more precise
information about using msconfig:

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab
and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply
and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you
do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop
processes. Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

This is a small, free app that is installed in Control Panel and called
"Startup" . Just uncheck what you don't want to load. If you decide
you want them to load, just check them again.

Very easy to use and a good first step.
