I've set up a Windows XP internet sharing connection on my XP SP3 Dell 1505 notebook. The
internet connection is via a USB WWAN wireless dongle. The host machine is fine (has
internet connection). The client is a linux desktop connected via ethernet. Host and client can ping each others connected ethernet interfaces (host address 192.168.0.1, client address192.168.0.2). These are manually set up static addresses. The client gateway is 192.168.0.1. The internet connection on the host shows up as "shared" in the network connections window. Windows firewall is off.
In addition to ping across the private network, ftp and rlogin are functional, so the private network seems robust. But the client machine cannot ping any outside (internet) IP address. I actually had internet access on the client when I initially set up the systems.
Then I updated a variety of operating system software on both the client and host systemsfor security and bugfixes, etc. Then I discovered that I had lost connectivity on the client.I've noted the following ICS related services are all running:
Remote procedure call
Telephony
Plug and Play
Application Layer Gateway Service
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Nothing shows up in event application log relevant to networking.
I believe the problem is on the host system, since the private network seems
functional in every other respect. It's not forwarding IP addresses. Ping
to outside IP addresses is pretty basic. Nor can I ping the IP address used as
the external interface by the dongle, i.e. the external IP address of the host,
from the client machine. Any help?
