Did you attempt to Start the service ? If so, was there an Error 1508 ?
To check the service's status, *right* click My Computer either on the
Desktop or Start Menu and choose Manage.
In the left frame, click on Services and Applications
In the right frame, click on Service
Click on Automatic Updates
Now click the Start link

IF the service will not start and the Error 1508 error appears, then the
system is most likely infected with a malware known as Vundo/Virtumonde.

Scan the system for the presence of malware:

IF variants of Vundo are present, save the report according to the
tutorial. Then seek assistance at a reputable anti-malware forum.
Please read the guidelines of the forum of your choice prior to posting:

IF, after the system has been cleaned up, you find that the Automatic
Update service can not start, download and SAVE:

Automatic Updates and WindowsUpdate Reset tool

The download link is at the bottom. After the download finishes close
ALL open browers and programs. Run au_client_toolv77a_redist.exe and
then restart the system.
