Windows XP cursor skipping

I had to dump and reload my computer last week and reinstalled Windows XP 5.1
and all the updates from the Windows site.
I now have a problem with the cursor when typing in any program, even the
google search bar and this message.
It appears that when I hit the 'e' or 'a' key, the cursor will skip to a
previous line and continue typing. It doesn't happen with every strike of
these keys, but enough to make me crazy!
I am grateful for any suggestions you may have on fixing this. Please be
clear on any instructions...not a beginner, but not advanced either.
Thank you
Ann

It is very likely that your keyboard is failing. It might just be dirty. Turn
it over and wack it on the back a few times.

Hi Ann,

Are you a laptop or desktop user? If you're a laptop user, have you tested
it with an external keyboard?
Have you tried a different PS2 or USB port?
Have you tested the "A" and "E" keys with a different board?
Do you have the most up-to-date drivers for your hardware from the
manufacturer website?

Hop this gives you a couple things to think about :)
