Automatic update shield lit up on my task bar. I used express download. 3
updates were successfully installed. 1 will not load. Windows.net framework
SP1. There are multiple tries on the update history showing this will not
load. How do I get the "shield" to turn off. Do I need this update? How
can I eliminate this update so my machine doesn't continue to try to load it?

You can uninstall any update in Add and Remove Programs, and you can turn off
auto update, then do 'custom' updates.

The update did not load therefore it doesn't exist in the Add/Remove Programs
list. The shield in the Task bar still is on indicating I have updates. Do
I need the update? If no - how do I permanetely eliminate it. If yes - how
do I install it?

I used "Express" Download and the machine said there were 4 updates. 4
updates were downloaded but only 3 were successfully installed. The four
download Windows.net said that the installation failed. History shows that
the machine tried previously to install this update but always failed. This
update does not show in Add/Remove Programs. How do I get the "shield" to
turn off. Do I need this update? How can I eliminate this update so my
machine doesn't continue to try to load

I had the same problem.
I don't know if your problem is the same as mine, but I contacted
Microsoft, followed their instructions and the solution seems to have
worked for me. Here is what I did:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility
============================================
1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
<http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe>

2. Save the file to your Desktop.
3. Install this tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework
========================
1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.

2. Please locate any .NET Framework software and remove it.

3. Restart the computer and see if the problem still exists.

For more information, please refer to:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301>

After that, please perform the following suggestions to reinstall .NET
Framework 2.0 and the update for it.

Step 3: Reinstall .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package and
the updates for it
====================================================================
1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0
Redistributable Package from the following link and save it to the Desktop.

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86):

Some programs require Framework 1, some Framework 2 and possibly some will require
Framework 3. They are all different.
