I have windows xp freshly installed on my laptop. When I click on the
Automatic Update icon on the taskbar, it simply disappears and
reappears again. Everytime I click on that icon, that's what happens.
It seems like a bug. I am not able to download the updates. Is there a
fix for this?

Thanks

Download updates using IE.

Yes but I'd like to fix the issue.

For the record... I've never had any luck using auto updates for
anything other than notifying me that updates are available.

I then go to the site and download them using IE.

I used to do auto update from computer directly. The problem with
downloading using IE is that I cannot deselect Genuine Windows Update
thingy... :)

Set it to download but let you decide what and when to install.

I did that. It gives me the icon on the taskbar. Then when I click on
the icon and click on "Custom" to select the updates, the dialogue box
and icon disappears and the icon reappears on the taskbar.... No
matter how many times I click on the icon, the same cycle continues.
I've restarted my computer but nothing's working...

Hmmm, that didn't happen to me. It *did* take a few reboots to get it to
ask me what I wanted to install, though.

I am thinking of rebooting with XP cd and repairing the installation.
It will replace any faulty files. I've done that for few other
occassions. I will try my luck again. It's a bit weird I got this
problem...

Just remembered what I did to get it going. First, turn off Auto
Updates. Reboot. Run Crap Cleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to get rid of all
the temp. files. Reboot again. Now turn on Auto Updates, set to download
but let you decide when and what to install. Reboot. Wait.
