Windows won't update my mouse driver

My wireless mouse suddenly stopped working on my Windows XP Home SP2 PC.
Changing the batteries made no difference so I tried to update the drivers.
This made no difference, the keyboard on the same controller works and the
activity light shows that it's receiving a signal from the mouse. I plugged
the controller into another PC and the mouse works perfectly.
I then checked the driver version and date with HP who confirmed that the PC
is not using the latest driver. They sent me a link to a newer driver setup
program, which says that it has worked...
But the driver is still a Microsoft driver version 5.1.2600.0 dated
01/07/2001.
This has to be my biggest complaint about Microsoft software it lies! It
said that it had updated the driver when it hadn't. Task manager and Vista
performance monitor say that my system is 98% idle, but it is to get a
reaction.
Does anyone know how I can force Windows to use the driver I need and not
some antique software that it stubbornly refuses to let go of?
Thanks in advance,

You state Winxp & then mention Vista, so which is it?

Windows XP Home SP2 is causing the mouse problem.
The wireless mouse stopped working and endless uninstalling of the mouse and
USB drivers has done no good.
If I attach a PS2 mouse Device Manager says that it cannot start code 10,
whatever that means. I have enabled PS2 mouse support in the BIOS.

I only mentioned Vista to make a point that modern varieties of Windows do
not report the truth. They say that no processes are running, even when the
hard disk is whirring away and nothing reacts to my input.
