I have a 6 mo old dell laptop that has been working great. I run military
anti virus software that is very good, but all of a sudden I can't get past
the dell start up screen. The computer gets to the dell screen gives the
option of F2, F12 and then it is a black screen...nothing there. The
computer is still running and i can play a movie and access my pictures
through dells media direct button. I don't know much but when i pushed F8
and tried to run it in safe mode these prompts came up.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\config\system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\c_1252.nls
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls

any help would be great. My computer is not backed up so I don't want to
start with restoring the harddrive! Thanks.

Open the Task Manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Del) and from the File -> New Task
(Run...) menu try to start Explorer.exe. Does it start and does your
desktop appear?

You are running an operating system of some sort if you can access and
see your photos and play movies, these things cannot be viewed or played
unless they are accessed and viewed/played from within an operating
system. I take it that you only have Windows XP operating system
installed on the computer, so it must be booting up to a form of Windows
in some way or other. Did you try pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys?
