Windows will not display GUI interface

Basic Windows loads util the GUI interface is supposed to display and it just
sits there. The normal WinXP loading screen apears (with the black background
and blue status bars), but after that, that's it.

Strange thing is I can access the HDD via the LAN, so Windows is loaded (to
some degree).

I've tried reinstalling with the repair existing installation option. This
was a breeze, going through all the normal setup procedures until after the
final reboot to load Windows.

When a repair fails, it's safe to assume it's a problem in the registry. I
would boot to 'safe mode with command prompt' , and run a system restore.

Try booting to Safe Mode, and log on to the Administrator account.
Create a new user account, admin-level.

You can also probably do this from the other system - right-click on My
Computer, choose Manage, Action, then Connect to another computer. Specify
the other system. Go to the Local Users and Groups and create a new user.

Now restart in regular mode, and try logging on to the new account.

If this works, your original profile may be corrupt. If not, take the
drive out, attach it to another system, and take a copy of your data.
Imaging programs (Acronis True Image, Ghost ) are great for this.

While you're there, delete the swap and hibernation files, and empty the
recycle bin. That sometimes is all it takes to fix this problem.

I've tried going into Safe Mode. The screen goes black with the "Safe Mode"
text in the bottom corners, but it just stops there.

Logging in is not an option is safe mode or normal mode. The loading never
gets that far.
I'm going to remove the drive and try to delete the page file, and recycled
bin.
