posted this question. Got a reply that didn't help. responded to that reply but no suggestions provided since, thus i am re-posting this problem.

Initial question:

I have just reinstalled windows 7 on my system and windows update is not checking for updates. When I go to the Windows update section there is a window with a red shield with an 'x' that says 'check for updates for your computer' with a clickable icon at the bottom saying check for updates. When i click it nothing happens. Tried using the fixit software but this 'encountered an error' and could do nothing. No error code given.

Currently, the program is set to check for and install available updates daily.

My version of windows has been activated.

Hi Wannise,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Based on the issue description you have provided, I understand that you are unable to check for updates in Windows 7. I will certainly help you with this issue.

1. Which Microsoft Fixit you are referring to?
2. Are you getting any error message?

Please follow the methods.

Method 1:
Run the troubleshooter from the link.
Open the Windows Update troubleshooter
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/open-the-windows-update-troubleshooter

Method 2:
Follow the steps from the link.
Temporary connection-related errors may occur when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
NOTE: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it you should re-enable it as soon as you're done troubleshooting the issue. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

If you face any more issues while working with Windows do post on Microsoft Community Forum.

I used the fixit that has the tag: This troubleshooter: "Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update" may automatically fix your problem. File name: MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.26286659688605245.10.1.Run. As i said before it gives an error saying it can't proceed. "Troubleshooter encountered and unexpected error..."

Windows update troubleshooter has not worked. It cannot start. Error code: 0x8E5E0247

Tried all steps in method 2 with no success.

Of note I downloaded and installed a registry entry last night. So now when i click on the "check for updates" button i get a message saying: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" Checked services in administrative tools section. Status of windows update service is "started". Startup type is "automatic (delayed start)". Computer has been restarted several times.
