My desktop system, a DELL Precision 490, Quad-core XEON, 12 GB RAM, has
Vistal Ultimate x64 installed on it.

On 2/13/2008, Windows Update informed me that updates were available, and I
allowed them to install. Afterwards, a reboot was required. Since then,
Windows Update has been broken and is unabled to search for updates. I get
a message stating that "Windows could not search for new updates", and the
error code is 0x80080005.

The following information is in my WindowsUpdate.log file in %WinDir%:

error 0x80080005.

Furthermore, all software installation attempts now fail, too. I am unable
to install Visual Studio 2008 Pro, as it fails during the pre-requisites
check every time I try to install it. Attempts at manually installing the
Microsoft .Net Framework v3.5 also fail.

On a whim, I booted up a virtual machine running Vista x64 that had *not*
been updated since March of 2007, and it had similar failures on installing
VS2008. I allowed Windows Update to run and get the current set of
available fixes/patches, rebooted, and then VS2008 installed OK. It would
appear that something *bad* was available via Windows Update in
mid-February, and it has since been fixed or removed from the available updates.

Please advise as to what needs to be done to remedy this problem.

TIA,

Chuck

Hello?

Anybody from Microsoft here, or an MVP, that can shed some light on this
problem?

I have been unable to get any Vista Updates or Security Updates to
install since Feb 14 2008. I agree it appears there has been some
thing gone wrong with the Windows Update Agent process. I get errors
80070002, 80070003, 80073712, 8007371B. I have researched for days
and tried all the solutions found in forums (rename or remove
Pending.XML, rename or remove SoftwareDistribution folder, turn off
all non-MS services and all start-up programs and do Clean Boot, turn
off all security and firewall processes, check for strange settings in
the HKLM/Components folder of the registry) - nothing has worked.
Have a case open with Microsoft but so far they have only suggested
the same actions I've already tried. Have sent them a dump of the
Update Log for analysis and waiting a response. One forum I read
stated the only solution is to re-install Vista and re-apply available
updates. Since that will involve re-installing all other software and
taking several hours of work, I'm hoping Microsoft will have a
solution. Since this seems to be an extremely common problem, I'm
surprised they haven't issued some type of global alert. Can they be
oblivious to such a wide-spread issue? Or maybe they just don't want
to admit there was a bad update published somewhere along the way that
caused all this trouble? Whatever - I'll come back and post if I get
a solution that works. Good luck to all of you who are having these
issues and are, I'm sure, just as frustrated as I am.

Only had the problem since SP1 was installed. Tried everything as
well...except re-installing Vista.
