Hi,

I've looked around the newsgroup already for similar problems and solutions, and found a few.. but nothing that was helpful to me or solved my problem: Windows Update successfully downloads update packages, but it always fails to install them. The error in the WindowsUpdate.log file is:

> 2008-05-11 05:43:59:921 1660 a54 Service WARNING: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800704dd for session 0
> 2008-05-11 05:43:59:968 1660 a54 Agent * WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240020

I have read KB943144 (and a few others as well). However, I've never re-installed or repaired Windows on this computer. With the exception of anything done by various Windows updates over the past two years (when I first got this computer) and one virus over a year ago (which seems to have caused me startup errors with svchost or something, but does not seem to cause any other problems), everything is pretty much as it was when I first got it. I also only had one account, which is the administrative account, so there should not be any problems with access rights.

For the record: I did create a couple new accounts, one with admin access and one without, to try seeing if that would have any effect. It did not. I also followed both possible solutions to the KB article, even though I have not repaired/reinstalled. Again, that did not work, either. At all times, I have not had virus or spyware protection running, and I am not firewalled on this PC (I'm pretty much using my router's NAT to keep my PC "firewalled"). I have also disabled or unloaded any non-critical drivers or services, so I could minimize any conflicts or problems with files in-use during the update. I have also given almost wide-open access and security on my PC.

Here is what I have done.. At first, I simply wanted to update my system since I had not in six months. At first, Windows Update insisted I update the Windows Genuine Advantage stuff before proceeding. It downloaded, then failed to install. I tried the steps I wrote above to see if that would solve it, but those did not work. I then manually downloaded the SP3 package (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe) and ran that from the command line console. It installed and rebooted my PC without problems. I then went back to Windows Update to make sure I got any updates since the SP3 release (which there are like 14 or so).. This time, the WGA seemed to work fine with SP3, but the additional updates all did the same: They'd download, but fail to install with the same error.

Here's what I am looking for.. Either a solution that works (the KB article was originally something like 2004, almost four years ago!) and restores my ability to use Windows Download manually (I do not like leaving on automatic updates--every time I've done that, the automatic updates have totally FUBAR'd my last PC. I swore I'd never do that to this one..) OR something to help me figure out how and where to download the updates and apply them manually from the command line.

[PS: I infrequently check any of these newsgroups, as I do not like the web interface, and I use Pegasus for email rather than OE. Please CC any replies to casteele@gmail.com, thanks.]

Err, I forgot to include my system info..

Windows XP Home Edition (As of now, Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111 [Service Packs 3]), AMD Athlon/64 3000+, 1G RAM, 350G HDD. (I can dump a whole slew of system, dll, exe, etc, information if it'll help..)

Also, I forgot I do have one other account.. But it's not a user account. It's a security account (restricted rights) created by the eMule file sharing program for when I'm using it.. I have noticed that sometimes while I'm running eMule, some programs and apps seem to think I'm logged into that account. But I've not used it in months, and certainly not while doing these updates. (In fact, I don't even know how to log into it. It doesn't show up anywhere but in the Documents and Settings folder, and when running eMule.)

How did you install WinXP SP3?

Was WinXP SP1 or SP2 installed before you installed SP3?

Error messages that you may receive when you try to download and install updates from the Windows Update Web site, from the Microsoft Update Web site, or from a WSUS server: "0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both:

Hi,

I downloaded the binary executable (and the iso image, just in case) for SP3 from the downloads section of the MS website, then ran it manually from the command line, following the dialogs until it successfully installed. My original installation was Windows XP Home/SP2 (the CD says version 2002, and the copyright is 2004), then I manually installed numerous updates, both from the web-based installer and by downloading and running the update binaries when available, up until about 6-8 months ago.

I did try the steps in KB910341, and found the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn" did exist, but had nothing in it except the default item. After typing in all the item/value pairs and rebooting, it seems to have worked now! I just hope it continues to work now....

Thank you very much for your help!

Regards,
