Windows Server Standard vs. Enterprise

Hello, I have installed Windows Server 2003 x64 Standard on a dual socket
Quad Core Blade. My app administrator has already installed Sql 2005
Enterprise. Being that this is the first 8 core system I had ever installed,
I forgot that Windows Server standard only uses 4CPU's while enterprise can
handle 8CPU's. In this situation does this still hold true? Or is it the
number of sockets that is important? Basically I would like to know whether I
need to upgrade the OS and if so can I just do an in-place upgrade as we have
production code on it now?

Thank you for your help!

Windows Server 2003 x64 Standard supports 4 Windows Server 2003 x64 Standard
PHYSICAL cpu's. Virtual, Hyper threading, core count irrelevant, how many in
the sockets is however relevant.

Thank you so much for the response. To clarify what you are saying is, I can
use Standard with a system that has more than 4 cores as long as the socket
count is no more than 4. So for example: 2 sockets each with Quad cores for a
total of 8 cores is fine but 6 sockets with single cores for a total of 6
cores would not work.

And to sum it up, I do not need to change anything with my install. Right?

My understanding is that the licensing model is "per socket", not "per
core".

Yes.
