I recently had my computer system crash and after taking it to the repair
shop I now have an invalad version of windows professional. When I took it in
it had xp home edition. How do I role it back to my version so that my
programs start to work again?

Any Ideas would be helpful since the repair shop said that it is not their
responasability
 
Lets see you took a PC to get fixed that had XP Home on it and you got back
a Computer that had XP Pro on it.............
would you care to explain what exactly were they "fixing"
1...ask them for the License/Activation Key for the OS they so generously
put on your system
2..reinstall XP home from your CD....formatting the HD in the process and
thereby losing all of your personal files
3.. go back to the shop and in a very firm and angry voice(not yelling or
screaming...just angry) demand that they fix the problem by either removing
XP Pro and reinstalling XP Home plus all of your programs and
files.............demand to see the owner/manager......or give you the
Activation Key.
All of your programs,if they are installed,should be working....you might
need to take ownership of personal files but evrything that runs under home
runs under Pro.

I'm afraid that the only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home
is to format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade
path or technique.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll
be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order
of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.

And then you report that "repair" shop to your local law enforcement
agencies (distributing stolen property: the illicit WinXP Pro), the
Better Business Bureau, and your state's Attorney General's Consumer
Protection unit.

As Bruce said, you need to format and reinstall. This issue is most
definitely the responsibility of the repair shop, if they won't take care of
the fact that they installed an illegal copy of Windows on your PC, I would
contact the BBB and Microsoft.

Could the hard drive have gotten switched, maybe?
