Windows Explorer searches: ASCII vs. Unicode

I am trying to do searches of my Word 2007 documents starting with
Windows Explorer showing the folder they are in, then pushing the
Search button at the top of the window.

I enter a word or phrase in the document in the little window that has
that caption, push Search, and I get no matches, when I know the
phrase I enter is actually in the documents. (I open Word and then one
of the docs, do a find, and it turns up.)

I do get matches for .htm documents that I have in the same folder,
ones that have the same texts as the Word docs (because I started the
docs
by pasting in the .htm texts).

I think this might have something to do with the .htms being coded in
ASCII, while the Words docs are in Unicode.

Is there some way to reset the Windows Explorer parameters so that it
recognizes Unicode? Do I have to go back and reset some defaults on
all of the Word docs? Is there some other way around this, or am I
barking up the wrong tree completely?

(I have 5.1, service pack 2)
