Windows easy transfer xp to windows 7 did not transfer my files back to my computer

I have re-installed Windows XP and would like to re-install my files that are on an external drive. I read a post from a few years ago with a similar problem and the responder said to "see if XP will read the file" What command or process is needed to accomplish this?
