Defender provides other function other than malware protection - one such
addition is the utility "Software Explorer" - a revised edition of msconfig.

Excellent deal - free and updated daily and is included in Microsoft's Live
OneCare program and Vista.

I agree. When a few of us were collecting bug info for the Defender beta,
the 'response time' on new issues of spyware was excellent. I hope the
OneCare program will keep up the same quality. Certainly the OEM anti-virus
apps are completely bogged down.

I think that both Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware are probably
better than Windows Defender. But that doesn't mean that Defender is
useless, or that it doesn't catch things that neither of the others
do.

Note what Eric Howes, who has done extensive testing on
Anti-Spyware products, states:

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the
best-performing anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one
quarter of the "critical" files and Registry entries" See
http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

So given that a single product is not enough for good protection, two
are better than one, three are better than two, and so on.

Do you "need" Defender? Do you "need" more than two? There's no clear
answer to those questions. My own practice is very conservative, and I
personally run

Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware
Spyware Blaster
Windows Defender
Super-Antispyware

No, I probably don't "need" them all, but I feel more comfortable and
more secure knowing that they are all there. And since I never run two
of them in the background at once, I'm not concerned about any
possible hit on performance.

Windows Defender is fine. It has an advantage over the freeware versions
of Spybot S & D and Ad-Aware namely realtime protection. I would opt out
of Windows Live OneCare.

Hope this helps.

If you run Spybot with "Tea Timer" on, it will prevent unwanted software
from being installed on your computer.

I read something the other day about Tea Timer, which you have to be
wary of but unfortunately what it was presently eludes me. Spybot is
fine for single system scans.

unfortunately, defender
didn't impress me and
my system seems better
off without it.

as long as you have
anti virals handy and
you can run the "one
care scanner" from the
web, you'd be ok.

but nothing wrong
with trying it but i
would simply ignore
the temptation.

I think Tea Timer will occasionally block registry updates causing
product installations or removals to fail. I know that it caused me
more problems than it solved (but rarely a day goes by without my
installing or removing something).
