Norton Antivirus found a virus and did it's job , it deleted it . After that
every time my pc boots up n comes on to desktop, it opens an alert window
which says "windows cannot find c:\windows\config\csrss.exe ...
Any help appreciated ...

thanks in advance , Babis

There are various places to startup a file. The best utility for locating
them is:
AutoRuns for Windows v8.61:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/Autoruns.mspx

MSCONFIG.exe might also help.

well, i think the genuine
file is located in
windows|system32 folder
and not the config system
folder.

so seems that zapping the
one in the config system
folder was appropriate.

but like mark eluded, there
may be lingering files that
are trying to load that invalid
file. so searching and deleting
the supporting program / malware
is necessary.

however, what might be
a consideration as well, is
that the virus may have
reprogrammed/corrupted
your genuine windows files
to look in the config system
folder for that invalid file.

so you may want to consider
a "repair installation" with your
windows cd and replace corrupted
files with genuine ones.

I'm coming back with this question : Using Repair Installation from Windows
Xp cd
Sp1 for solving the problem , is it true that you can't receive after that
Updates from Microsoft ?
Is it aproblem that the original cd is SP1 and I'm running now SP2 ?

thanks in advance , Babis

you can repair you pc
windows sp2 system with
your winxp sp1 cd.

all the genuine files for
sp1 will replace those
that have been corrupted
or updated by sp2.

however, after you bring
you system back to a
genuine state of operations,
then you will have to reinstall
sp2 and all the subsequent updates.

when sp3 comes out, all the updates
and sp2 will be combined.

at that time "i highly (HIGHLY)
recommend that you finally take
the plunge and slipstream your
win sp1 with sp3 into one cd.

then you will finally be able
to repair your windows or
do an sfc in the future with
one cd.

if in the meantime you want
to create an sp2 slipstream
now, let me know.

i think it wouldn't be a bad
idea to wait a number of months
after sp3 is released. that
way there can be some assurance
that sp3 is functional and without
flaws.

db

thanks for your contribution to solve the problem , but as it seems in post
3 ,the problem was solved using the little program Autorun downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/Autoruns.mspx
instructed by MVP Mark L. Ferguson .( unchecking the item in start up )
So I have to wait the sp3 and slipstream sp1 with sp3 , as you suggest.

thanks a lot , Babis
