Time Zone update for Windows 98 Operating System
The USA and Canada and other countries have decided for energy
savings, greenhouse gas reduction or other reasons to change the
starting and ending dates for Daylight Savings time. This requires an
update to the time settings for all versions of Microsoft Windows.
For Windows NT, 2000, or XT microsoft provides Windows Updates for the
necessary changes. However since Microsoft is trying to migrate users
to Windows Vista and XP they did not provide an easy update for
Windows 98 so I made one from the information they provided for
Windows XT, modified it for the proper Windows 98 registry settings
and tested it on several computers running Windows 98.
One can use the time zone editor "tzedit.exe" for Windows 98
(available from Microsoft) to check the settings as I did. I have
verified during the 2007 changes from Mountain Standard Time to
Mountain Daylight Time that the computers changed the date
appropriately on the correct dates.
If you have a friend that is still using Windows 98 please pass this
onto them even if they live in another part of the world. I have not
tested it with Windows 95 but I believe it is compatible with it as
well with perhaps a minor change to the Regedit header in the file.
The registration editor file "timezonenew.reg" downloadable from
www.besteam.ca/info/timezonenew.reg contains the same information used
to patch Windows XT but has been modified for the proper Windows 98
registry settings. This editor file purges the old settings and
supplies the updated settings.
INSTALLATION
Step1: The timezonenew.reg file should me merged into the Windows 98
Registry. Opening it will usually do it. Otherwise download it then
"right click" on it and select "merge".
Step 2: Go to "Start Menu" --> "Settings" --> "Control Panel" -->
"Date/Time"
Step 3: On the "Date/Time Properties" window select a time zone not
your own and save it.
Step 4: Repeat this last process but select your own time zone, make
sure Daylight Savings Time is properly selected or unselected as your
region requires, then save it.
