I am purchasing a used 10gb hard and will need to put win 98 on the drive I
was wondering if i have to format it or just use the install disks and that

I hope you're not paying more than $10 for it.

I would fdisk and format it because any bad sectors will be marked and
taken care of during the format.

The drive might also have problems with the MBR, boot sectors or FAT
tables and it just makes sense to wipe that clean and start fresh.

Thanks thats what i thought i should do but wanted to make sure.

And it would be a good idea to run SpinRite, at least level 4!

1. Do your homework first at
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html
with special attention to checklists of what you may
need to write down (e.g. Product ID or Key Number)
before you wipe the old installation.

2. Your plan works OK only if the 10 Gb HDD is
installed as drive C: (i.e. not if some other drive is
already FDISKed as the Primary DOS partition.)
