i started out with "Basic" in the '80's , graduated to DOS , then windows 3 , '95 , '98 , ME . i have been using xp , sp3 now for i think over ten years , i've never had problems with xp , that could not be easily resolved . my father has had a dell laptop with xp , sp2 for about the same ten years , however he stayed in southeast asia after vietnam and bought the computer in indonesia . he returned to the US about a year ago, i gave his machine a thorough going over , but most of the mechanical parts are worn out . i.e. cooling fan , cd motor , hdd motor . he finally got tired of it because it was so noisy , so we went last september and bought a new HP with windows 8 . WHAT HAPPENED ? . DOES ANYBODY REALLY TRY TO USE THAT SYSTEM ? I studied the EULA....it appears that $650 only really buys the plastic case , everything inside belongs to microsoft , Hp , cisco , adobe , sun , any and all third parties who want to lay claim to it . it is SO USER UNFRIENDLY . I tried for months to make it so an 86 year old man could use it , and have come to the conclusion that its an EPIC failure . i opened up his dinosaur laptop managed to connect a fan built for a desktop , but i have to use the BRAND NEW WINDOWS 8 FOR THE TRANSFORMER , incorrect voltage , and others issues will soon fry the good "laptop with no bottom cover , distorted screen , no sound , and an occasional shock , if you try and lift it , without it being properly positioned over the WINDOWS 8 failure machine . Anyway what i'm trying to ask is what are my options now , my xp3 desktop works like a charm , i'v upgraded all the hardware several times now , i built it primarily for gaming , but i use it for everything , IM GETTING TOO OLD TO MESS WITH ALL THIS "SMOKE AND MIRRORS" WINDOWS 8 ****......Will there be a third party to offer support for XP. or am i screwed? I refuse to buy a new computer unless i can get another more friendly operating system , and i have been out of the loop for for over 10 years now (because xp is still the best microsoft ever offered) . Am i too old for computers or does anyone else notice how poor this windows 8 ? HELP PLEASE IF THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE TO 8 I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . i'v tried the "shell" programs , but they still come down to "enter a password for a program that you never agreed to" just to turn the damn thing on .
