windows 8 crashes on restart but fine on normal shutdown

I'm running windows 8 on an Asus q550l and over the past two weeks upon start up windows crashes..i.e. Windows doesn't start and it goes directly to a diagnosis mode/recovery loop. I've refreshed the computer several times and have finally figured out the cause: if I do a full shutdown of the machine it starts normally but if I select 'restart' or do a hard shut-down (power button) it crashes. chkdsk and virus scans aren't finding anything. Has anyone had similar problems (and hopefully) found a solution? Thanks
