Windows 7 Premium Home Version in Sony laptop which will no longer function properly

My husbands laptop was infected with two Trojan horse viruses, which I tried to remove with Malwarebytes. I then ran defrag because the machine was running very slowly. After that it would only boot with a recovery disk. Somehow, it is back to running very poorly, though it appears that the Trojan horse files are gone. Does anyone have a fix? Do I need to re-install Windows? I have the product code but not the software.
