Good Day,

I have set up a 2k3 SBS and i am wondering, is there a way to set up a
dial up connection on the server to only connect to the internet when
internet resources are requested from client computers? ie. When a
user opens a browser on their PC, the server will then dial up to the
internet, and when the user is finished ( or all users are finished)
the dial up connection will be dropped.

Unfortunately we do have to use dial up connection as our area isn't
served with high speed internet as of yet.

I thank you for your responses.

Sincerely,

Chris Nickel

Hey Chris,

You will need to setup a Dial up connection using SBS server's Connect to
the Internet wizard. I haevnt try this before but I think after you have
setup that, and when your clients request for HTTP, the server should auto
connect.

however the user might be requesting a few times out b4 they are actually
shown the page (due to the time needed to connect to the internet).

Also be aware that some of the server apps might try to connect to the
internet to download/upload data.

Thanks for your response,

Unfortunatly i wasnt able to test out your theory until today. And
sadly, after i set up the internet connection, using the wizard. the
Modem dials in and stays dialed in.

Does anyone have any experience setting up a pure dial up connection
in windows 2k3 sbs standard. and setting the connection up so it will
only connect when an internet resource is required, ie. exchange
server is checking for pop email or when an internet page is requested
from a client?

Which brings me to another question... When the server is connected to
the internet via dial up, how do i set up my server/clients so that
the clients will use the internet access of the server to display
websites?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Chris.
