Windows 95/98/ME Win 98se wallpaper question.

On my one system that has 98se on it when I use a pic for wallpaper
that is in portrait size (Taller then wide) Windows stretches the
width so it fills the whle screen but the height stays the same.

My second system which also has 98se shows it in portrait size with
blank space on side of it.

How and where would I find / change the setting for the first system
that stretches it so it shows it as is like my second system?

TIA

Thanks for reply but I have no idea what you are telling me to do
here.

Could someone help me that might explain it so I know what you are
talking about??

I can find no "Position" drop down box. Is this for Win98se??

Remember we all are not Windows wizard and know where everything is.

Thanks again.

Read the instructions at this web page:
How do I adjust the Windows background?
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000592.htm

From your description, the distorted image is set to "Stretch", while the properly
displayed image with blank space on either side is set to "Center"

1. Right click the Desktop

2. Click "Properties"

3. Click the Desktop tab on the applet that opened

4. Find the little window in the lower right section that says "Position"

5. Click the little arrow by the side of the position window and select
"Center".

6. Click "Apply" then "OK"

FYI, you get at "Display" from the control panel (like most things). From
there, you do not need to do #1 & #2 above.

Thabks again but I did 1 and 2 and seen no desktop tab.

Guess I will wait until I can get someone to come and look at it and
see what is going on.

Thanks again all but I know nothing to nothing about these things.

Go to "Control Panel", "Display" and on the "Background" tab, see if
"Display" is enabled. If so, click on the drop-down box, select "Stretch"
and click "OK".

My error, it is called "Background" in Win98. Still, that is (IME) the tab
that is displayed when the applet opens and the "Position" window is there
big as your face. I don't see how you could miss it.

Click on stuff once in a while and you'll learn.

People are talking about "Stretch", "Stretch", "Stretch", "Stretch".

I looked at both my 98se machines (The one that "Stretched" the
wallpaper and the one that did not) and under the background tab in
display properties for wallpaper it has for display JUST tile and
center. There is no place to enable "Display". You just check "Tile"
or "Center" and no drop down box. I have no idea where everyone is
coming up with this "Stretch", "Stretch", "Stretch", "Stretch" stuff.
I looked at other 98se machines and neither do they have "Stretch",
"Stretch", "Stretch", "Stretch".

I am beginning to wonder if people are talking about windows98se or
some other OS!!!

Actually, I am beginning to wonder what OS *you* are really talking about.
If you go to the web link below, you will see a typical Win98SE Display properties
sheet opened to the Background tab:
http://home.triad.rr.com/glenvee/files/Display.jpg

There is a dropdown box named Display that has Tile, Center, and Stretch options, as
shown. If you do not have that, you are either using a highly modified (or highly
borked) installation, or you are using another OS.

What you are describing that you see, sounds like you are using Windows 95, not
Windows 98. This is what the Background tab in Display properties looks like in
Win95:
http://home.triad.rr.com/glenvee/files/Display95.jpg

I believe you are actually using Win95, not Win98

I also only have tile or center. That's why I suggested in my
first reply that the OP use the free prog from
www.wallpaperchanger.de which has all those settings besides its
obvious principal usefulness.

But as we know, posting replies is often totally pointless.

Thanks. I was wondering why you posted the paper changer. I just
DLed now and will try it.

As for the person who said he wonder what system I really was running
one system is a Packard Bell purchased in 1998 with came with Windows
98 on it when I got it and the other is a Hewlett Packard of about
same year that also came with Windows 98.

I upgraded both to Windows 98SE with LEGAL copies of the OS which I
have in front of me.

Will check out the MS website mention. I am running Tweak UI I
beleive it is called.

Thanks again.

Good catch, Ben. I didn't realise that was a side effect of that TweakUI setting.
