Why does WMI fail?

A little over a year ago, we switched to SCCM deployment. Since then, we have noticed increasing amounts of WMI failures on our computers. Granted, we could have had this issue before, and not noticed it. However, since SCCM relies heavily (almost completely) on WMI working, we've noticed it.
I've written a script that proactively checks the WMI namespaces twice a day, and if it finds a problem, repairs the WMI repository. However, the SCCM client then has to be repaired, as this removes the sms namespaces. Either way, we still have an issue.
Our main concern though is this -
WHY is the WMI failing so much? Has anyone else had issues like this? We have roughly 20K machines, and about 4K of them have failed WMI. We try to fix them as fast as we can (I haven't yet implemented my script enterprise wide, there are other things it checks / fixes that have to be tested), but...
Any thoughts on this?
Enterprise is running Windows XP. We plan on moving to Win7 64 by (hopefully) 3rd quarter. What are thoughts on this issue still being present once we move to Win7?
