I have a genuine copy of XP. Why am I required to use up my bandwidth
everytime I connect to the internet ?
I'm registered shouldn't Microsoft contact me if a critical update is needed?

You are choosing to get automatic updates - I assume...
You can choose to do many things...

"Nothing", "Notify", "Download and Notify" or "Download and Install"...

If you choose nothing - you can simply wait until late in the day the second
Tuesday of each month and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan
for/install whatever updates you want. The updates are normally released on
a schedule.

You can also sign up for update email if you desire.

However - registration means little to nothing and all activation does is
allow you to get updates and continue using the operating system.
