From the Start button, go to Run. Type "Winver" (minus the quote marks)
in the Open: window and click OK. A dialog box should appear and the
information is in it.

- When you boot up - what picture is displayed?

- If you go to a command prompt - type in:

ver

And press enter - what is displayed?

- If you right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties" --> What
information can you gleam from there?

- What original CD do you have to do the reinstall? <- may not be accurate,
as all sorts of things can happen - but it can give you a clue to work from

- What sticker is on the computer (Windows 98 or Windows 2000?) <- may not
be accurate, as all sorts of things can happen - but it can give you a clue
to work from.

Can you not see when you start your computer?
OR
Start-Run-type in 'dxdiag' without quotes-OK
On the first page that comes up 'system', you should be able see which it is
quite clearly.

Usually the easiest way for a novice is to right click My Computer, select
properties
On the next screen, it tells you the version of Windows and the processor &
amount of RAM.
