The latest build of the MSIX Packaging tool (v1.2023.807.0) is now available. It contains features to help users convert packages easily, and the developer tooling gets a boost with additional capabilities built into Visual Studio.

Automated accelerators

In the June 2023 update, we delved into how accelerators serve as an easy button to streamline the conversion process. We’re pleased to share that accelerators have now reached general availability! Also, with the latest update, when you’re applying a fix for your app using an accelerator, the MSIX Packing tool will display a notification that outlines which FixTypes require manual intervention.

Incorporating feedback that we received from our community, we’ve also updated our documentation to help you apply accelerators (including from the command line). To learn more about how to create accelerators, read our Accelerators documentation.

First launch tasks

The MSIX Packaging tool now allows you to maintain the order of first launch tasks. If you’re converting an app that has multiple shortcuts, you can now choose the default entry point for your app. To access this feature, select the option for Default Launch or change the order of the first launch tasks by selecting Browse.

Visual Studio extension for App Attach (local attach)

In our June 2023 update, we also introduced the Visual Studio App Attach extension. This tool streamlines your workflow by enabling you to create VHD(x) images and publish them to your AVD host pool, all directly from within Visual Studio.

Today, we’re making this tool broadly available to all developers. We've added features and fixed several issues based on your feedback. Here's a glimpse of what's new:

  • Local App Attach: You can now test your app by attaching it locally on the device, enabling an efficient development experience.
  • Streamlined VHD(x) package creation: Create App Attach-ready VHD(x) packages for external use, simplifying the deployment process.
  • Enhanced user experience (UX): A refined user interface making it more intuitive and user-friendly.
  • Robust error handling and reporting: Allow for quicker resolution and a smoother development journey.

You can download the Visual Studio extension from GitHub or get it from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Then visit App Attach from Visual Studio for detailed instructions on setup and usage!

Once again, we thank the community members for helping shape the future of MSIX. Please do continue to provide your inputs via the Feedback Hub.
