What is software and media coming to these days?

Stephan Rose

Seriously!

I mean vista is bad enough with all it's anti piracy, WGA, DRM and all
its other assorted acronyms designed to make the customers life difficult.

DVDs are a pain with their CSS and region coding.

Music is riddled with DRM to prevent someone from actually listening to
it after having purchased it.

Now today, having some free time, I considered maybe going out and buying
Bioshock. It seems interesting enough and might be fun to play for a bit.
Before shelling out around 50 bucks though, I decided to do a little
research first and I am glad I did.

Come to find out, 50 bucks doesn't just buy me bioshock, it also buys me
this:

A rootkit which compromises security in order to prevent piracy.

2 time installation limit (supposedly going to be/has been raised to 5)
with spyware that calls home to make he above possible.

SAY WHAT??? COME AGAIN???

Now rootkit taken aside and just looking at the install limit, there
supposedly is a way to uninstall to regain an install token from what I
have read. Wonderful. And what if I can't? What if my hard drive fails?
What if XP dies and I need to reinstall? What if I simply buy a new
computer and throw away the old one? In none of those cases would I be
uninstalling. Will that then leave me with a $50 game I can no longer
use?

I mean seriously, where is all this heading??

After about 15 minutes reading about this I was ready to puke.

Needless to say, I did not buy it. I seriously hope that all these
companies' anti piracy measures are doing a lot to stop piracy because
they are going to need it to make up for the losses they are incurring
from people such as me who now refuse to buy their product.

It's really getting beyond ridiculous.

Haha, well about the only musical skill I've got is listening...and that
I absolutely love to do. Particularly to artists who actually still know
what the words "Live Performance" mean and can actually do it Live and
not just lip sync.

I always admired artists that could perform well live...

you need to be very very very good to do that. And there is a certain magic
to it.

Now with technology and recording studios you can make any sound, sound
good... its getting more and more technological...

not that it is bad... you mold the final product and shape it and transform
it..

but you have to have good input to start with.. the better the input the
better the output.

Now back to vista, how did crap-vista come out of good input (XP), its still
a mystery to me. How could they possible blunder so much?

Agree 100% - I hope these companies get their just deserts.
Just like Sony, briliant hardware with great potential but
ruined by stupid corporate decisions. Hence, while Sony pissed about
restricting users of Minidisc with their archaic decisions preventing you
from even uploading a soundtrack you had recorded yourself, MP3 players
wiped the floor with them despite their totally crappy sound quality -
simply because they didnt have the restrictions.
No doubt there'll be a pirated version of the app with none of the
restrictions you mention.
All that antipiracy measures do is cause problems for the genuine
purchasers.

Blame the recording and movie industry for CSS and region coding, these were
out before Vista. Why should you have the right to steal the content off any
DVD?

I-Tunes, Rhapsody, and other music sites install these schemes not just MS.
Once again this is not something created by Vista.

I hadn't heard this where did you find your information? I'd like to see the
link, if you please. Good I am glad they put the install limit on it! Its
great to know that if my games are stolen that the thief won't be able to
install to 200 computers!

Lets face it my friends the days of people being able to do whatever the
hell they want on the net are coming to end. The internet has lacked
accountability for decades its high time someone instilled a little! I
personally have not ran into any DRM problems caused by Vista, I've had
plenty of trouble with I-Tunes though. Apple will eventually follow suit with
tougher DRM, if they haven't already.

I have moved on and I do use something else, been doing so ever since MS
released Vista.

However, I personally still need to support Windows, and that includes
Vista, with the software I write so therefore, I still need to keep an
eye on the windows world and keep windows around for testing purposes.

Here's a hint: The games are still stolen and still installed on 200+
computers. Bioshock was cracked within days of release.

As far as links? Just google for bioshock...

None of this is doing much of anything to prevent any piracy.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the internet and *everything* to
do with my rights as a customer.

When I buy a movie, when I buy a song, when I buy software, I want to
watch, listen, use the above when I want, where I want, how I want, for
whatever reason I want without being restricted in any of the above. As
long as I'm doing it in my own home, on my own hardware, for my own
personal use, NOBODY has any right to tell me otherwise. Period.

The internet doesn't even come into play here. I don't need the internet
to do any of the above.

I don't need the internet to watch a movie.

I don't need the internet to listen to music.

And with the exception of online games, I don't need the internet to use
my software.

And in absolutely none of the cases above, do I *WANT* to need the
internet.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that one can't install Bioshock for
instance without an internet connection. What if I don't have one!? I
need an internet connection now to play a friggin single player game that
is not played online? That's ridiculous.

Nobody is doing themselves or anyone else any favors by supporting any
crap of this kind. It ultimately only hurts the consumers.
