What has happened to my desktop?

Signed on this morning and rather than go straight to the usual WIndows Screen with lots of stuff on I saw the rolling dots with "preparing windows displayed. I then had a very reduced opening screen with about half a dozen apps (?) when I went to my desktop all my folders, files and applications had gone. What has happened and how can I get them all back. Explorer has also lost my favourites.
