"Welcome" Screen at Startup

I have just re-installed XP including SP2 and IE 7.

When I start the PC it goes through the Windows XP screen and then the blue
"Welcome" screen comes up. There is nothing else on it - no name or icon -
just the single word "Welcome". After about 5 seconds it clears
automatically ( no click required) and I am taken to Desktop.

As the sole user of this machine I am happy not to have a password. My
question is why does the Welcome screen display - in my circumstances it
seems to have no purpose. Is there a fix so that it can be disabled and to
enable me to be taken straight from the Windows XP splash to Desktop.

You are aware that not having a password means that ANYONE, including a
hacker over the internet, can access your machine without any problem at
all?

No but that's why XP has passwords - to SECURE the machine and data. If it
didn't need passwords then there wouldn't be the facility. It's BASIC
computer SECURITY....

confirm this - but isn't it just a case of deleting the Username?
no user - no need to display logon screen....
but this would be best to confirm before action! or unless you have
something
like a Ghost backup of the system to restore to, maybe a restore point
would suffice.

1. Go to Start->Run and Type "Control Userpasswords2" and press
enter.


2. Uncheck the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to
use this computer."


3. Click Apply and Ok.


4. Choose which account will be automatically logged on.

let us know if this works - I'll be trying it on a freiends pc later
this week to achive the same result to Skip any logon display, and go
straight to the desktop.

Thanks for your interest but don't try this solution! The reason I've
started this thread is that I tried exactly this twice yesterday with
potentially disastrous results. When you restart the PC it goes into a
permanent hang with the message "XP is loading". Nothing else happens and
there is no key combination to get out of it. All you can do is to power off
and hold down F8 key while you power back up. Then you have to use safe mode
to get to a restore point. The second time I had a password and was able to
use this in safe mode to get going again.

Still hoping that someone can come up with a fix to my question.

Simon If you are getting that issue after doing the "Control Userpasswords2" then you have another issue with your computer. The poster "neutrino" who posted that fix for your issue was absolutely correct with his answer to your original issue.

I would look in your event viewer and also read the error message that is generated when your Windows fails to boot correctly.

Again . To bypass the Welcome Screen and for putting in your name and password you need to do Start\Run and type in "Control Userpasswords2" and take out the checkmark from User must enter etc etc
