Volume contol icon disappeared from task bar

I have read the previous threads on this topic, but none of the proposed
solutions (at least the ones I understood) helped.

After 3 years of use, the volume control icon disappeared from my task bar.
I went to the Contol Panel, opened Sounds and Audio Devices, and under
Volume, checked Place volume icon on the taskbar. I get the message "Windows
cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume control
prograam has not been installed." What program are they talking about, and
where would I find it?

Without a way to access the system setup files, you will not be able to fix it.

Certainly, there are a host of ways to get those files, depending on what
you have now, and what you are willing to do to get them, if you don't own
them now. Preinstalled system? CD disk? '/i386' folder on the system? You
need to look into what you have, and what you might do. Buy something? Borrow
a disk? Give up?

What usually works for me is:
1) Go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices
2) If the checkbox for "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked, then
uncheck it
3) Click OK and close this applet (Sounds and Audio Devices)
4) Now repeat these steps, but CHECK the checkbox - as opposed to unchecking
it.

I can't remember if you have to reboot, but I think not.

Note: I lose this sound icon in the Task Bar Notification Area every 2-4
months. The steps above have worked every time. But be advised there are
other causes so there is no guarantee this will work for you.
 
Right click on Start button and select Properties, Taskbar, Customise.
The top part of the window lists Current Items but if you use the scroll
bar on the right you will find past items. Place the cursor on Volume
and use a smaller scroll bar to change the Behaviour. Click on Apply and
OK. You may need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Thanks, but I have already tried that. The volume control is listed under
Past Items. I go to "always show," but it doesn't but the icon back, even
after rebooting.

Thank you! The instructions on the link you gave me for reloading the
sndvol32.exe file did the trick.
