I haven't bought gasoline for over 18 years and don't own a car. It's
been wonderful.

Almost everything I need is within walking distance. If farther, I take
a cab, metro or bus. When I travel to Madrid, for example, I take a
train or plane.

Hell, I didn't drive a motor vehicle between 1987 and 2005. Used public
trans, my bicycle, and my feet. I'm starting to slow down a bit in
middle age, really f@#ked up knee, so now I own a scooter that gets 70
miles to the gallon.

Acting responsibly towards the environment ain't something that just
started because of the recent Global Warming crisis, I've been trying to
do my part for a couple of decades now.

Will it matter in the long run, probably not, but at least I tried to do
my little part.

Being one myself, I hate to admit it, but a lot of Americans waste
resources in short supply like gasoline.

As I said may times I'm semi-retired. I live is an affluent
suburb of Chicago. Daily from my den window I witness the madness.

My neighbor leaves for work in his fancy sopped up sports car. He'll
have a 34 mile one way trip to downtown Chicago. Most every day the
"expressways" will crawl and if lucky he'll probably get 12-15 MPG and
it will take him at least an hour to get to his office.

Shortly after the wife pulls out her oversized SUV to drive her
younger kid to the school less than a mile away. I guess something
must be wrong with his legs. If you pass the school in the morning and
again in the afternoon you'll seen a long line, mostly SUV's driven by
soccer moms all waiting to drop off or pick up the kiddies.

About 15 minutes later a school bus almost empty stops at the end of
my block at the closest cross street. The neighbor's two teens somehow
have managed to walk the 300 or so yards to the bus stop. They will
pass one massive super modern high school to be driven to one much
further away that's even bigger.

A little while later mommy takes out the SUV again to run to the
grocery store or something. She's already on the cell phone as she
pulls out the driveway. Maybe that's why she called me up last year to
sheepishly admit she ran into my mailbox...over 80 feet from her
driveway. This routine repeats two, three more times daily always
using a big SUV never gone more than 40 minutes or so. What a waste!

Later in the afternoon if I'm out often a huge public bus drives past
on one of the feeder streets. It scheduled to go to the local shopping
center about 6 miles away. In the twenty plus years I've lived here
not ONCE have I ever seen a single person on that bus while going
through my neighborhood. I wonder how much gas that wastes apparently
driving around empty. Of course the shopping center is packed and the
parking lot is filled with cars.

Well the neighbor's oldest teen is turning 17 and wants a car of
course. So my neighbor probably will get him one this summer. One
family of 5, daddy's sports car, mommy's big SUV, another car that
rarely leaves the driveway and soon junior's. One family wasting a lot
of gas. Oh... prices just hit $3.76 per gallon for regular. I haven't
been out yet, maybe they will be higher. Don't bother me that much, I
got my Prius.

We in North America have had our lives centered around the car for to long.
I to have neighbors that drive the kids to the school bus stop 1/4 mile
away. (most are afraid of their kids getting grabbed by some sick bastard) I
would walk my kids to and from the bus stop. Where I live the downtown
parkcades are full of full sized 1 ton dual wheel pickup trucks with V10 and
Diesel engines to take one person and their laptop to the office and back
home paying $300 - $400 a month to park. V8 powered SUV's are everywhere.
Most dealerships don't even stock cars and trucks with the smaller engines
as nobody wants them. Big power all the way.

Oh, I could go to one on many places to talk Ubuntu. But I like to sit
in this ng to dispel some of the anti-Linux BS that gets spewed out. You
know, people like you that can't prop Vista up on merit so you take pot
shots at Linux.

Pretty lame to call another OS a toy when Microsoft gave us BOB.
