Vista thinks multiple antivirus programs are installed

I've seen posts describing the /verifyreposition /salvagerepository switches
for winmgmt. Verify has always show the repository is consistent. Using the
netstop, rename repository, net start approach initially works, but within a
day Security Center is reporting multiple antivirus programs again.

Any ideas how to fully resolve this issue?

I've never seen Security Center report multiple antivirus programs after 1)
the ren repository repository.old business is done and 2) when there is
really only one antivirus program installed.

Look again at the security programs you have installed. If you had
previously installed/uninstalled something like a Norton or McAfee product,
use their respective specialized removal tools to more thoroughly uninstall
them. Otherwise, post the names of the antivirus programs that Security
Center thinks are installed.

Malke, I've been seeing Security Center report multiple antivirus programs
for a month now. I used your advice about verifying the repository, then
rebuilding it when the repository is consistent. As I said, it works for a
while, but the next time I restart, the security warning is back.

I have used uninstall (in Add/Remove), the Windows Install Clean Up tool,
and the specialized remove tool for Prevx, the previous antivirus. The
current antivirus is ESET NOD32.

Disconnect from the Internet to be safe. Uninstall NOD32 (the best one and
the one to keep, IMO). Since Prevx has a removal tool, use it again. Now
Security Center should show that no antivirus is installed. Does it? If
yes, reinstall NOD32. If no, post back with the name of the antivirus
Security Center thinks is installed. Also don't forget to include the names
any other security type software you have installed, including Ad-Aware,
Spybot S&D, etc.

It turns out it's a moot point. I installed Vista SP1 yesterday afternoon.
When the system came back up, it wouldn't allow me to logon to the domain,
the server did not have a trust relationship with my laptop. Odd, my laptop
and my user account were (and had been) members of the domain. I logged in as
local admin, disjoined and re-joined the domain, then logged in to the domain
as myself. A new profile was created since I had joined a new domain. I
copied over relavent data from the old profile, and went on. The security
warning has not reappeared so far. It looks like the problem had something to
do with my profile.

I agree about ESET, it's an impressive product.

Yes. Get rid of the multiple AV programs and install a SINGLE one.

Running Vista with multiple AV packages or Firewalls is dangerous and
useless, anyway.

Or, get rid of the AV programs which fail to register (or unregister)
themselves with the Windows Security Control Panel applet

Such AV programs which work properly with Vista will register
themselves when installed, and UNREGISTER themselves when removed.

Obviously, you use one or more AV packages which do not work correctly
with Microsoft Vista.

Have you tried cleaning any and all Previx entries out the Registry?

Eset's offerings are the best by far for both home users and
commercial users.

I really don't know much about Prevx, anyway. From my understanding,
it is more of a root-kit removal/malware removal product than an AV
package anyway. I certainly wouldn't use it to keep protected from
Viruses or Trojans.

You might try installing Vista clean, then settle on installing a
SINGLE AV product, such as Eset's latest NOD32 offering.

That should fully resolve the issue for you.

I have, especially when using AV packages which were not fully Vista
compatible, or which used their own Security Centers, such as Symantec
or McAfee. It's just too bad that their "security centers" are really
just SALES tools, rather than actual Security Centers. And they have
no plans for working exclusively through the Vista Security Center any
time soon. In fact, these two really fought Microsoft tooth-and-nail
in the Media when Microsoft required all security products to register
themselves with the Vista Security Center. And they are STILL
fighting them in this arena.

The results of this anti-Microsoft attitude are very apparent, as
you've found out for yourself.
